From about sixteen I was oily and spot-prone, and I wanted one thing: clear skin. So I went after it. Actives, scrubs, foaming cleansers, things I mixed in my own kitchen. If something hadn't worked in a week, I binned it and bought the next one.

Then my second pregnancy changed everything. My skin went dry. Properly dry, tight in a way I'd never known, dull, and still breaking out. Nothing touched the spots. Eventually I stopped trying. And it stayed that way after I had my baby: the same dry, dull, breaking-out skin I didn't recognise as mine. Oily and acne-prone was the only skin I'd ever known how to have. This was new, and nothing in my routine was built for it.

So for the first time, instead of trying to fix it, I tried to understand it. You can't fix something you don't understand. I'd spent years proving that.

Then came the dark marks the spots had left behind. And this time I treated them slowly, with my barrier in mind the whole way through. It worked, and my skin never went backwards while it was happening.
